Words and phrases to order in a restaurant and talk about food

Imagine this: you sit down at a table, the waiter/waitress comes over, smiles… and you know what you want, but you’re missing two or three key words to order calmly.

In DELE A2, this topic comes up a lot because it’s real life. Eating out, ordering in a bar, talking about typical dishes, asking about ingredients, saying what you like, or what you can’t eat.

In this article you’ll get DELE A2 restaurant vocabulary, ready-to-use Spanish phrases, and short models to practise both the speaking and writing parts.

Why this vocabulary is so important in DELE A2

At A2, DELE assesses whether you can manage everyday situations. A restaurant is one of the most typical ones: there’s interaction, questions, short answers, numbers, prices, preferences, likes, and simple problems.

If you master these words, you’ll feel more confident in the oral and written tasks, because you’ll be able to describe plans, experiences, and tastes without going blank.

Basic restaurant words (DELE A2)

To start, it helps to be very clear on these Spanish words:

Restaurante, bar, cafetería, terraza, mesa, carta, menú, camarero/a, cocina, cuenta, propina, reserva, pedido, plato, bebida, vaso, copa, botella, cuchillo, tenedor, cuchara, servilleta.

Ready examples in Spanish:
Tenemos una reserva a nombre de…
Una mesa para dos, por favor.
¿Nos puede traer la carta?
La cuenta, por favor.

Meals and moments of the day

Desayuno, almuerzo, comida, merienda, cena.

Examples in Spanish:
Para desayunar, tomo café con leche.
Hoy comemos fuera.
Cenamos a las nueve.

Parts of the menu

Entrante, primero, segundo, plato principal, guarnición, postre.

Examples in Spanish:
De primero, ensalada.
De segundo, pescado con patatas.
De postre, fruta.

Typical and very useful drinks

Agua (con gas, sin gas), refresco, zumo, café, té, cerveza, vino.

Examples in Spanish:
Para mí, una botella de agua sin gas.
¿Tiene zumo natural?
Un café con leche, por favor.

Key verbs to order in a restaurant

Pedir, querer, tomar, traer, recomendar, elegir, probar.

Spanish phrases that always work:
Quiero una ensalada.
Voy a tomar pasta.
¿Qué me recomienda?
¿Me puede traer pan?
¿Puedo probar esto?

Polite words for ordering (very DELE A2)

Por favor, gracias, perdón, disculpe.

Spanish examples:
Por favor, una mesa para cuatro.
Gracias, estaba todo muy rico.
Perdón, ¿me puede repetir?
Disculpe, la cuenta.

Vocabulary to talk about likes and preferences

Me gusta, no me gusta, me encanta, prefiero, odio (better to avoid it in the exam, it sounds strong), delicioso, rico, bueno, malo, dulce, salado, picante.

Examples in Spanish:
Me encanta la comida italiana.
Prefiero la carne al pescado.
No me gusta el picante.

Common ingredients (very “askable”)

Carne, pollo, ternera, cerdo, pescado, marisco, arroz, pasta, verduras, ensalada, tomate, cebolla, ajo, patata, pan, queso, huevo, fruta.

Examples in Spanish:
¿Qué lleva esta sopa?
Lleva tomate y cebolla.
¿Tiene queso?

Allergies and restrictions

At A2 you don’t need technical vocabulary. Simple Spanish sentences are enough.

Alérgico/a, alergia, sin, no puedo comer, vegetariano/a.

Examples in Spanish:
Soy alérgico/a a los frutos secos.
No puedo comer gluten.
Quiero una pizza sin queso.
Soy vegetariano/a.

Typical restaurant problems (to react in A2)

Frío, caliente, demasiado, poco, tarde, error.

Examples in Spanish:
Esto está frío.
Está demasiado salado.
Falta pan.
Perdón, no es lo que he pedido.
¿Cuánto tiempo tarda?

Questions you can ask the waiter/waitress

Diálogo 1
Camarero/a: Buenos días. ¿Qué van a tomar?
Cliente: Para mí, una tortilla y un café con leche, por favor.
Camarero/a: ¿Algo más?
Cliente: Sí, una botella de agua sin gas. Gracias.

Diálogo 2
Camarero/a: Buenas tardes. ¿Tienen reserva?
Cliente: No, pero queremos una mesa para dos, por favor.
Camarero/a: Sí, claro. Aquí. ¿Quieren el menú del día?
Cliente: Sí, por favor. ¿Qué hay de primero y de segundo?

Mini writing models (DELE A2 writing)

Modelo 1: plan con comida
Este sábado voy a ir a un restaurante con mis amigos. Vamos a comer comida española. Yo voy a pedir una paella y una ensalada. De bebida voy a tomar agua. Me gusta mucho probar platos nuevos.

Modelo 2: experiencia en un restaurante
Ayer cené en un restaurante italiano. Pedí pasta y una ensalada. Estaba todo muy rico. El camarero fue muy amable y el precio fue bueno. Quiero volver pronto.

How to memorise this vocabulary without studying for hours

A trick that works really well at A2 is studying by scenes, not endless lists.

Picture yourself in the restaurant and repeat out loud in Spanish:
Una mesa para dos. La carta. Voy a tomar… La cuenta.

And if you want to make it even easier, write 6 sentences of your own using these Spanish structures:
quiero, voy a tomar, me gusta, prefiero, sin, la cuenta.
