Is the DELE A2 hard?
The DELE A2 isn't a high-level exam, but it's failed more than people think. And it's almost never for lack of Spanish: it's for not knowing the exam. As an examiner I see it all the time: people with a good level who don't finish in time or lose points because they don't understand what each task is asking. The real difficulty of the A2 isn't the language, it's the format and the timing.
Having an A2 level isn't the same as passing the A2
The exam has 4 tests (reading, listening, writing and speaking), each with very specific tasks and tight timings. If you turn up without having trained them, you find an exam that looks nothing like how you studied the language. That's why specific preparation makes the difference between passing and not passing.
How long does it take to prepare for the DELE A2?
It mostly depends on your starting point:
- If you already have a real A2 level: a few weeks of training the format (real tasks and a stopwatch) is usually enough.
- If you're close but lack fluency: reckon on one to three months of steady practice.
- If you're still at A1: it's best to consolidate the level first and then spend time on the exam.
More than the number of hours, what counts is consistency and practising with the real format.
How do you pass?
The exam is worth 100 points and you pass by 2 groups: reading + writing (Group 1) and listening + oral (Group 2). You need a minimum of 30 out of 50 in each group. You can't make up for one group with the other.
My advice as an examiner
Don't try to cover everything at once. Master the essentials of each test, train with real timing and repeat. A simple, correct sentence scores more than a complex one full of mistakes. That sense of control is exactly what's missing when you go in a rush.
