What is the DELE A1?

The DELE A1 is the most basic Spanish diploma from the Instituto Cervantes. It certifies that you can understand and use very frequent everyday expressions, introduce yourself and give simple personal details. It's a good first goal if you're just starting out and want a motivating milestone.

Does the DELE A1 count for Spanish nationality?

This is the question that so many people arrive with, so I'll be clear: no, the DELE A1 does not count for Spanish nationality. Nationality by residence requires the DELE A2 or higher, and the A1 is just below that legal minimum. If you sign up for the A1 thinking about nationality, you'll be one step short of what you need.

So which exam do I need?

For Spanish nationality you'll usually be asked for two exams:

  • DELE A2: certifies your level of Spanish (compulsory for non-native speakers).
  • CCSE: tests your knowledge of the Spanish Constitution and of Spain's social and cultural reality.

And some good news: the DELE diploma doesn't expire, so the A2 is valid for life.

My recommendation: go straight for the DELE A2

If your goal is nationality, my advice as an examiner is to not waste time on the A1 and go straight for the DELE A2. The gap between A1 and A2 is small, and the A2 is exactly the level you're asked for. What's more, the A2 isn't a high-level exam: what most people fail isn't the language, but the format and the timing. With good, specific preparation, it's completely achievable on the first try.
