In the DELE B2, DELE C1 and DELE C2 exams, you will receive graphics or statistics, mainly for performing Task 2 of Written Expression Test 3 in DELE B2 and C1 and in Test 2, Task 3, in DELE C2.
It is essential that you know in detail what type of information you can find in this type of material and also to know how you should comment on them.
For this instance of the exam you usually give you 5 points that you must strictly respect and for this purpose, the graph or statistic you will receive will act as an incentive to write about a certain topic.
WHAT INFORMATION DOES IT INCLUDE
It is important that, based on the information in the graphs or statistics, you can correctly interpret the data, assess what they provide and know how to summarize their contents to obtain your own conclusions.
The graphics can represent phenomena in the political, social, economic, historical or geographical spheres, although it is likely that the fields can be combined and find geopolitical, socio-economic or historical-political themes, among others.
Thus, you can find bar, sectoral/circular, linear or pyramidal/triangular charts. The ones that are most repeated year after year are the bar and the circular ones.
STEPS TO FOLLOW
First, you must carefully and patiently observe the data in the graph so that you can classify the topic you are dealing with in time and space, as well as establish what units it is represented in.
Then, you must do an analysis and explanation of the graph where you must talk about what came before and what comes after, that is, what refers to the background and consequences of the subject matter of the graph. You can also evaluate from your perspective what you think the future projection could look like.
Third, as a closing, include your opinion and justify it.
EXPRESSIONS THAT YOU COULD USE
When analyzing the graph or statistic, you could use introductory expressions such as โWe are faced with...โ a graph that โExplains... โ, โTalk...โ or โIt's about...โ. You could also say โWe are faced with a statistical representation of...โ and mention the topic at hand. In turn, you can express that the graph or statistics"transmits to us... โ, โIt tells us... โ, โIt shows us...โ or โIt teaches us... โ, among other variants.
When delving into the topic, depending on the type of information included, you can also mention that the graph or statistic refers to a โA collection of...โ ,โ A sum of... โ, โA group of... โ, or โA division of... โ, โA distribution of...โ or "A distribution of...โ.
REFERENCE TO TIME
You must show the analyzed time period in the graph or statistic. You can mention in this regard that the period โComprises the months of... โ, โGroup the years...โ , โIt spans the months...โ or โIt spans the years... โ, among other expressions.
HIGHS AND LOWS
Remember to refer to the highest point and the absolute minimum on the graph, also analyzing the progression over time.
Analyze the information and keep in mind when the maximum, the minimum and what the intermediate point could be, as well as when there is a rise or fall in the indicators.
COMMENT ON THE DATA
The data provided in the graphics should not only be mentioned textually, but it is important that you comment on them. That is, do not list the information, but try to analyze the numbers and contrast them with each other.
To do this, you can analyze the data present in the graph from your personal point of view, creating your own well-formed sentences. This will score you points and help you pass the exam.
