For Spanish nationality you need two exams

One of the most common questions I get is this: which exam do you have to take for Spanish nationality? The answer is that, in most cases, there are two: the DELE A2 (which certifies your level of Spanish) and the CCSE (which certifies your knowledge about Spain). They are different exams, with separate registrations, and it's important not to mix them up.

What is the DELE A2 and who needs it?

The DELE A2 is the Instituto Cervantes Spanish diploma that certifies the minimum level required for nationality. It's needed by non-native speakers. It tests four skills (reading, listening, writing and speaking) and, once passed, the diploma doesn't expire.

What is the CCSE?

The CCSE (Constitutional and Sociocultural Knowledge of Spain) tests the Constitution, the organisation of the State and Spain's social and cultural reality. Its key facts:

  • 25 questions across 5 tasks (multiple choice and true/false).
  • 45 minutes long.
  • You pass by getting 15 of the 25 questions right (result: PASS or FAIL).
  • The CCSE certificate is valid for 4 years.
  • If you fail or don't show up at the first sitting, you have the right to a free second registration.

Do I have to take both? I'm a Spanish speaker

Here's the key point many people don't know. If you are a national by origin of a Spanish-speaking country, you are exempt from the DELE A2, but you do have to take the CCSE. Also exempt from the DELE A2 are, among others, minors and those who already hold a DELE A2 or higher. In other words: almost everyone takes the CCSE; only those who don't already prove their Spanish another way take the DELE A2.

My advice as an examiner

Plan your dates well: they are two separate registrations and it's best not to leave them to the last minute. If you have to take the DELE A2, remember that having the level isn't the same as knowing the exam: prepare for it with real tasks so you don't lose points to the format or the timing.
